Hi, I’m Cheerio! I came from a really hard place—one of nearly 30 dogs rescued from an abusive and neglectful situation. I was tied to a heavy chain with very little food, and when I arrived here I weighed barely 30 lbs and had sores from sitting in the same spot for too long. I'm a bit picky about other dogs but the shelter recommends multiple meetings with another dog to safely introduce us.
Even with everything I’ve been through, I’m a good boy with so much potential. I’ve been working with a trainer and I respond really well to training. I’m not a big fan of new people at first, but give me a little time (and some treats!) and I’ll be your loyal best friend—I would never turn on my person. I’m protective of the people I love, but deep down I’m a big softy who enjoys kisses, tug-of-war, and going on adventures. I’ve never known what it’s like to have a real home, and I’ve been waiting here for over a year and a half. I know my perfect match may take time, but I’m worth it—and I’m ready for someone who’s willing to give me the life I’ve always deserved.

Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but we happily consider adopters from across the United States. If you're not local, you're welcome to travel here to adopt or arrange transportation. All transportation arrangements and expenses are the responsibility of the adopter. Virtual meet-and-greets are available.
